What this means if you keep hens
In our example flock (6 hens laying 5 eggs per hen per week, with the feed and supply costs set in the calculator), running costs alone come to about $3.90 per dozen, before the coop and the hens. At the latest US average, store eggs cost $1.63 less per dozen than that.
Since January 2019, the US average was above $3.90 in only 9 of 92 months: December 2022 to February 2023; December 2024 to May 2025.
So at national average prices, eggs from this example flock cost more per dozen than store eggs in most months. Backyard eggs can come out ahead when you compare with pricier eggs (organic, pasture-raised or farmers market), when egg prices spike, or when your own setup and feed cost less than the example.
