How Much Coop and Run Space Does Each Chicken Need?
No single number is official. Extension guides give a range, and the range changes the size and cost of what you build.

| Coop floor per hen | 2 sq ft | Penn State |
| Coop floor per hen | 3 sq ft | UNH, Oregon State |
| Outdoor run per hen | 8 to 10 sq ft | Oklahoma State |
| Outdoor run per hen | 5 to 10 sq ft | Penn State |
| Outdoor run per hen | 10 sq ft | Poultry Extension |
| Nest boxes | 1 per 4 hens (UNH, Oregon State), 1 per 4 to 5 (Minnesota), 2 for the first 4 then 1 per 4 more (Penn State) | as listed |
| Roost per hen | 1 linear ft (UNH), 6 to 7 inches (Maryland) | as listed |
The Poultry Extension article adds a caveat worth knowing: there is very little peer-reviewed research on backyard space allowances, so these figures are mostly practical guidelines. It also says smaller urban runs are possible but need careful management.
What it means for six hens (our arithmetic)
- Coop floor: 12 sq ft at 2 sq ft each, 18 sq ft at 3 sq ft each.
- Run: 48 sq ft at 8 sq ft each, 60 sq ft at 10 sq ft each.
- Nest boxes: two at one per four hens, three under Penn State's rule of two for the first four hens and one more for each added four.
The bigger numbers cost more in lumber and wire, so they raise your setup figure in the calculator. See startup costs for the full checklist.
How to choose
- Plan for the adult flock, not the chicks.
- If the coop is small, give the birds a bigger run, and the other way around.
- Check local rules for coop size, distance from property lines and the maximum number of hens.
Protecting that space matters as much as sizing it. Read how to protect your chickens from predators.
